This definitely depends on the API though, many an API doest lack asynchronous calls. It can also make your code more messy, there is something elegant about having all your thread code in a ThreadFunction() and knowing that anything to do with talking to the hardware is there and only there. Of course having to use signal objects/shared memory/pipes/sockets/whatever to communicate with the main thread can 100% negate that or make it an even worse mess.

multi-threading is very good idea for maintaining a system in multiple ways in same time.
